#TBR219 – Old School

*We had major issues with the Audio and we can only apologise for that*
We take a trip back in time to 33 years ago when your hosts were sitting their A-levels. We’re joined by Rob McKie and James Peake to reminisce on those good ol’ days. We hear about the Anarcho-pacifist movement, Dave getting trapped in a room, Ms Woodcock and plenty more. Most interestingly though is hearing how 5 people experienced the same time but with 5 different experiences and perceptions. Again, we apologise for the audio which is utter shite.

We hear some stories from his childhood in Mississippi, the time he ran into Dog the Bounty Hunter, whilst they were both chasing down the same guy, his time in the military and his newfound love for Scotland. Happy birthday, dude – here’s to plenty more… and to the next time we get to hang out and have a beer 🍻 – maybe in France or Belgium?

#TBR216 – What the camera didn’t see

Can you imagine what it must be like on the set of a Movie with Hollywood A-listers spouting out iconic lines in front of you? Well our guest, Alec Hirschfield, didn’t have to imagine – he was the cameraman on some incredible productions. He joins us to share his stories and experiences. From having Robert De Niro giving his “You talking to me” speech in Taxi Driver whilst staring right at him to a missed opportunity with Scream Queen Jamie Lee Curtis. It’s a life we are frankly quite jealous of! We cram as much as we can in to just one hour… but if you want some more then guess what? #TBR215 – Climate Change is all your fault

Climate Change. Do we all understand the problem and the cause? We’re joined by expert Andrew Kythreotis to help us separate the fact from the fiction. Are politicians doing enough? Do we understand the global disagreements that hinder the problem being solved? Is the image of Gaz in budgie-smugglers enough to make us solve the problem for once and for all? Whether you are Greta’s greatest supporter or a nay-saying non-believer, this episode is for you as we try to look at the cold hard facts and ignore the hot air opinions. Can this conundrum be solved? Yes. The real question is will it?

Witchcraft – Grade A Mambo Jahambo or a genuine phenomenon? Lynzie Cotton joins us to tell the tale of Helen Duncan – the last person to be tried and convicted under archaic witchcraft laws… as recently as the 1940s. Lynzie educates on the Witchcraft laws and how they came to be and have changed over the years before telling the tale of the Last Witch of Scotland… and there’s a recipe for ectoplasm just for good measure. Trevor Caswell, Canadian musician and all round good guy joins Tall Boy Radio to chat about his varied music back catalogue. The music on each album is different from the last. Buy, there was one song that he had recorded that captured our interest. Despite never visiting the UK, Trevor wrote and recorded a song called The Old Man of Mow – a land mark thousands of miles from his home but only a stone’s throw from where Tall Boy Radio is recorded. A monument that the guys had never heard of. We find out what performing live to an audience feels like and how a song grows from inspiration to the final product. #TBR212 – Living in a simulation…

Steven Houghton-Burnett joins us to help us see the world through different eyes – maybe even simulated eyes? Are we living in a simulation? If we were, would it change your outlook on the world? These are just 2 of the many questions posed in this episode. We examine the most common models that we could well be operating within. This episode will make you think. You may dismiss the concept. You may buy into it completely. You will learn something if you keep an open mind. You must have wondered, as we have, what is life all about. We don’t have the answers but maybe this episode will help you understand the questions.

#TBR211 – A Cold Grave

Star of the silver screen Benjamin L Newmark and CEO of DBS films and director of movies such as Forest of Death and A Cold Grave Brendan Rudnicki join Tall Boy Radio to talk about their latest film A Cold Grave (check out tallboyradio.com to grab a link to rent it on Amazon). I grew up loving 80s horror films and I’m willing to bet that you did too. It was great to hear about the blood, sweat and tears… and pure passion that went in to making these movies… but it gets better, DBS films use really horror fans in their movies and that could mean that you (and maybe even Beans) could show up in one of their future productions. Listencto this episode… it could make your dreams come true.

What happened of Gok Wan had a case of beer strapped to one hand and a box with a deadly scorpion in the other? Now it’s just got silly… but you’re still curious aren’t you? It’s our fun seasonal quiz. Gaz takes on Andy on answering 18 of the toughest, most peculiar questions that you’ll find on a Podcast quiz. #TBR201 – Non-Alcoholic beer

Christmas means socialising. Socialising means drinking (well for us reprobates anyway) and you don’t want to be that guy that falls foul of the drink-driving laws. So we look at the beers you can enjoy without having to call an Uber. We taste tested 6 Non-alcoholic beers to see how they stack up against their foamy alcoholly cousins. We have to say that 3 of them we were really quite impressed with… 2 though, we had high hopes for and were seriously underwhelmed. Go grab yourself a cold alcohol free beer, kick back and enjoy.

We don’t answer any of these questions, we tell you what we think will happen – let’s see if we’re right. Go grab yourself a beer and watch the world crumble around you.

#TBR197 – Down the Rabbit Hole

Do you carry cash on you any more? Us neither. Cash is an important part of our society and we take a look at what society would be like if it were replaced by an entirely digital currency. We start by listening to a clip “borrowed” from Instagram to decide is it scaremongering or should we be concerned by the power a Government could wield over you by controlling a digital currency. There a few examples where the boundaries have been overstepped and we also consider where charities and the homeless would be without cash donations. Finally we finish up with a clip from Charlie Chaplin’s the Great Dictator set to the musical piece “Beans does stuff” by Lewis Pickford.

#TBR196 – The NFL invades London

We love American Football (or Football as it’s called stateside) and we love to talk about it. We were honoured to be joined by Liz to talk about how interest in the game has grown in the UK. One of the 1st female hosts of an NFL Podcast – and hosts a podcast for Sky Sports, we were keen to hear her take. Liz was lucky enough to get to all 3 International games in Wembley and White Hart Lane and all whilst performing press duties. It’s clear that she is passionate about the game and has a great deal of knowledge. It was another opportunity for Dave to learn about the game that we thoroughly expect him to become a big fan of. We also looked at the likelihood and controlling factors about the much discussed idea of a franchise in London or even a whole conference in Europe and the barring factors that could prevent that from happening. Why not check out Liz’s content online at @NFLgirlUK.

#TBR195 – The Pendle Hill Witches

The Witches of Pendle Hill. Were they witches? Did they commit the crimes that they were convicted of. Their famous trial in 1612 is one of the best documented legal cases of the time and it saw many of them put to death after suffering in the squalid conditions of jail. It’s a story that began with a simple altercation. But it’s a story that we don’t feel qualified enough to tell…so we drafted in an expert. Lynzie Cotton is the curator of pendlecore.com and she knows far more about the trial and the fate of these women (and one man). This is not just a case that is important to local folklore but it shaped the way that children give legal evidence in court today. We hope you’ll find this episode as interesting as we did. Are Witches real? Of course they are, but they might not be what you think! Go grab yourself a cold one, kick back and enjoy.

#TBR194 – Past Life Regression

Who were you in a Past Life? Maybe understanding that will help you get to grips with the person you are in this life. Shikha Sepai is a hypnotherapist based in Pennsylvania and not only does she assist with all the the things that a hypnotherapist does but she will help you discover your past lives. Originally from the IT world, Shikha had a spiritual journey when she started her own personal past life regression and later discovered she had a gift for it too. No surprise really, as her past lives all had a healing theme and on top of that, the trauma she suffered in them had resonated into this life. This helped her to understand her current being. Matty Iceman Frates TBR to find out exactly how hypnotism works and helps by asking insightful questions about spirituality and the journey that lays ahead…. and behind. We also ponder how are own children and how past lives could shape theirs. Go grab yourself a cold one, kick back and regress.

#TBR193 – Ruku’s beer reviews

Beer. Beer. Beer. Yes we talk about it nearly as much as we drink it. Ruku reviews beers on line – https://youtube.com/@rukusbeer9434?si=CPQuYtLaf68VezxK and all whilst wearing a selection of balaclavas. First question – why the mask? …and the rest of the talk is about beer, except of course the talk of Cameo and Family Guy impressions. Go grab yourself a cold one (or room temperature depending on the ales). Kick back and enjoy.

We also find out a little about the man who sits in the big office and hear his history in the British army that gave him his grounding (whilst serving alongside Prince Harry), his first forays into the world of business and learn a little about how imposter syndrome affects people in different ways with very different effects. #TBR190 – NFL season preview with Pigskin Podcast

American Football – what do we Brits know about it? We were joined by Mark and James of Pigskin Podcast to give you a preview of the season ahead. Full disclosure, we didn’t really do that. In amongst Dave’s questions and questions from our viewers, we took a deep dive look at the NFL draft, shared some NFL stories amongst many other factors. There’s something here for new fans and more seasoned pros. Our guests really knew their stuff and were very passionate about the sport. We did get round to predicting our favourites to lift the trophy. Go grab yourself a cold one (best leave the Bud Light in the cooler), kick back and enjoy.

#TBR189 – Travel like a Tall Boy

We have all had some amazing holidays this summer and we’re pleased to be able to share some of those stories with you. San Antonio, Texas. Orlando, Florida. Lanzarote, Spain. 3 different holidays.
Beans headed to Texas to fulfil a dream with his family and I do mean family. Taking his Wife and 2 Kids to stay with the cousin he tracked down on the internet when there was a missing link in the family tree. Beau had been to England in 2022 and to be able to spend 10 days with them on the return journey to Texas – it was a dream come true and the holiday of a lifetime… and to spend his 50th at a party at Beau and Cris’ house – phenomenal.
Gaz took his Wife and kids to Orlando, Florida – wondering whether this could be the last trip they take together as his kids get older. He wanted to do something special, his daughters had turned 18 and 16 and passed their exams with flying colours and he and his Wife had been married 20 years… and, of course, Gaz had just turned 50. They wanted to do something special so they revisited one of their favourite holidays.
Dave wanted a break away from his busy work life as CEO of a successful company and the renovation of his house to spend some time relaxing with his Wife and 2 kids. Along the way, he had some great experiences.

#TBR185 – Unhoused.org

Homeless. Unhoused. Rough-Sleepers. It’s a community getting larger thanks to the cost of living crisis. Proud people with feelings that once had a rough over their head but now need help just to have a meal. Call it poor life choices, or blame what you will but they are people just like you or I. Some people don’t like giving to charities because they don’t know how the money is spent or see the difference that it makes. Anisha and her Husband Varon set up unhoused.org with all these things in mind. It’s a charity with a difference, buy one, gift one. With every item you buy for yourself, they donate another one to a homeless shelter… or simply buy the items that you want to give and they will deliver them to the heart of the community for you. But it doesn’t end there. If you’ve subscribed to their newsletter, you get to see the difference that your purchases are making. Anisha shares the story behind their idea and talks about the wider problems that need to be addressed for the unhoused community. The UK needs people like Anisha and Varon and they are looking for more people like them to help make this project bigger

Take a listen and remember their names because these 2 (and their 2 daughters) are going places. They’ve only been doing this for 12 months but there are plenty of doors opening for them… just be weary of the ghosts and ghouls that are on the other side. From Poltergeists in Pontefract to tales of haunted tamagotchi and devil dolls to ghostly goings on in a Merseyside “Madhouse”. They talk us through a whiole host of spectral happenings. #TBR181 – Living off grid – My Story

Life off Grid always has a back story and Alex shares his with us. In Lockdown he set up a successful glamping business but soon encountered problems with some troublesome neighbours with a NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) attitude. Rather than being driven out by their churlish nonesense, he dug his heels and continued his off grid lifestyle with further resolution as to why it was worthwhile. He has hit every challenge head on and triumphed. This is a great story of how one Bohemian enjoys his life on the outside of society… truthfully, we were all a little bit envious.

Professional Wrestling – are you a fan? Yes, this episode is for you. No? This episode is definitely for you. James gives us a fascinating and honest insight in to the world of Wrestling that he loves. James would describe himself as a newcomer to the sport, but it was clear to us that he has the attitude and the attributes to make it all the way to the top… although he isn’t getting ahead of himself and is taking it one step at a time. We were joined by Dave McGuinness of The Busy Dad UK 🇬🇧 Facebook page to talk about just that. We shared funny stories of our occasional shortcomings as parents in the hope that we can give you a laugh and at the same time remind you that everyone has that moment where they feel like a bad parent. We learnt a little about Living off the grid and a lot about the journey that took him there. His language is colourful but not as colourful as his stories, his experiences and his opinions. It was an absolute joy to hear someone talk so freely about anything and everything. We hope you take as much out of this episode as we did.

#TBR176 – Do you believe the media?

Again we listened to some clips from social media – but this time we fell in to one of their traps and got distracted by the nonsense and distracted away from the real story… Do the Government want us to be talking about silliness like an MP asking to take a speed awareness course in private instead of focusing on the way that they control, direct and cajole instead of representing our wishes. It’s not all politics, there’s fun stuff like global warming, should we be offended by jokes and cancel the comedians and are we aliens?

Wine-tasting the TBR way. We taste 4 wines made by… or endorsed by celebrities. Graham Norton’s Sauvignon Blanc, Kylie Minogue’s Sauvignon Blanc, Gary Barlow’s Organic Red and Snoop Dogg’s Cali Red and see if they taste better than a Chelada and a questionable spirit from Illinois. This episode was streamed live and featured question from viewers. Thank you for your contributions, we appreciated them all. Go grab yourself a cold glass of vino, kick back and enjoy.

How different is 1973 to 2023. 3 of the TBR boys’ lives have spanned these dates and the first of the gang to turn 50 is Dave. We looked at what’s changed and just how much has changed and what are the next big advancements. AI is scary but it’s going to happen, we look at where it is and where it could go. Beans’ recent trip to Abersoch in North Wales has him all nostalgic and Dave too is in reflective mood. There’s the usual fun questions and facts. Song covers. That’s what this episode is all about. Do you love them or hate them? Should artists just release their own work? Is it lazy? Or is it a way of them showing their appreciation for another artist? We’re joined by Beans’ cousin Beau in Texas and his pal Kevin who is currently in California. We look at the covers that we love and share a few titbits of trivia along the way. Do you prefer Bob Dylan’s or Jimi Hendrix’s version of All along the watchtower? #TBR166 – “Boredom is a choice”

This is the first time that we have used a quote from the episode as the title. It inspired Mitch on his journey through life… and it made us think. Mitch lost an arm in an industrial accident in his early 20s. He was already battling alcohol addiction. A battle he would continue to fight for 20+ more years. A fight he very nearly lost before – facing death from failing organs – he decided to fight back and went to rehab. It was a critical turning point. He talks us through his challenges, his battles and most importantly his triumphs – landing a huge blue marlin, flying a microlite, building furniture, becoming a commercial drone pilot and winning tournaments at darts…. all whilst missing his left arm. It’s an inspirational story.

Soccer. It’s the most popular game on the planet – but is it also the most cut throat? One day you’re in the driving seat of an elite club, the next you’re gone because you’ve slumped in the table and replacing a manager often brings a quick (yet mostly short-lived boost). We look at the statistics to see if it really is beneficial in the short and long-term and whether Soccer has something to learn from other sports. The real question is – we have a transfer window for players. Should we have one for managers too?

#TBR160 – Stop remaking movies!

Movie remakes – an abomination or a good way to introduce great movies to a new generation. Beans’ cousin Beau joins the guys to discuss the argument we started back in episode 153. We can all agree that the Ghostbusters remake was an insult to a great movie… whereas The Fly starring Jeff Goldblum was arguably much better than the original. What’s your take? Which version of Psycho do you prefer? Was Evil Dead improved by the bigger budget? Di you love Brad, Matt and George more than Dean, Frank and Sammy in Ocean’s 11. We’d love to know. It’s back despite popular demand – the game we invented, convinced that we could get it published and yet it’s still confined to the walls of our podcast. The concept is based on the conversation starter at dinner tables around the globe – “Who would win in a fight….” Well we turn that into a game. Ever wondered who’d be triumphant if Tyson Fury took on Sarah Michelle Gellar? What if we gave the star of Buffy the Vampire-slayer a sabre? This is the game for you!! #TBR150 – Last Meals

We all have a favourite food or meal and we all can reflect on that one time that we ordered the perfect meal and it tasted awesome! Beans, Gaz and Dave take a look at a very different kind of a meal. The last meal. We look at 10 last meals of the famous and infamous. We give each one a rating out of 10. What will take the coveted top spot? Will it be the Killer Clown’s fast food? Or Jesus’ last supper? Or what the Vampire of Dusseldorf chose to sup? You’ll have to listen to find out! We also share with you what we would pick if we were sentenced to death for crimes against podcasting. We need to point out that behind the silliness of this episode, there are some very serious crimes. We are not making light of them – intentionally – we have the utmost sympathy for their victims and the family of their victims. #TBR149 – What the fudge?

You love a quiz, I love a quiz, we all bloody love a quiz and just as an extra bonus Gaz didn’t get leathered on black Russians and start abusing the host. We trialled an idea that we’ve had for a quiz that we’ll do a couple of times a year. In the future, Beans will host and Gaz and Andy will take on guest opponents and we’ll actually bother to keep the score. The concept? Well we’ve basically ripped off Qi and made it a bit more sh*t. #TBR134 – How to spot a conspiracy theory

There’s no Gaz this week as he’s in San Francisco and Andy is off doing the Dark Lord’s bidding… so Beans is joined by friend of the show, Dave to take a look at conspiracy theories and how to spot them. We look at 7 conspiracy theories : The Great reset, Bill Gates is a Bond villain, Kubrick faked the moon landings, The Biden election was fraudulent, Scientific proof that we have a soul, chemtrails and Avril Lavigne is Dead. We look at the likelihood that these are true – keeping in mind that Dave is sceptical at best – and try to figure out why conspiracy theories are so popular. We look at the very nature of them and how they are viewed. As always we’d love to hear your opinions on any of this. We talked about a lot of the issues that surrounded the sport that we all love. It’s difficult to talk abou the game without looking at the gulf in the finances between the Premier league and league 2, how the English press can influence our opinions on players, players loaned out from the big clubs to the lower leagues and of course how the English Ladies recently made history. #TBR132 – Taking TBR to Church

We were joined by an old School friend who went on to become a vicar. We’ve mentioned Richard Pollard on the Podcast before, chiefly the talk he gave about faith to a packed lecture theatre of his 6th form piers. Gaz and Beans were both there. Gaz’s appearance in this episode is brief but he does make an appearance despite what we say,at the start. Richard has made a significant difference in many people’s lives – after faith made a significant difference in his. Despite Beans, Gaz and Andy believing in different things we wanted to share Richard’s journey with you regardless of what you believe, it’s important to see the difference that having faith can make. Richard brought his friend Ian along with him. Ian has battled addiction and homelessness and he overcame these things and has not relapsed down to his willpower and his faith. Richard was kind enough to answer all of our questions such as he can reconcile his faith alongside some of the unpleasantness that this world has to offer. #TBR127 She haunts America!

We were joined, all the way from Miami, Florida by Gina Black, a Paranormal investigator. Not only has she conducted investigations around the States, she’s also been to Japan to look into strange phenomenon there too! You can find her on Social Media at instagram.com/shehaunts – and if that weren’t enough we were also joined by Beans’ cousin Beau in his first appearance as Guest host, he had a couple of experiences in his past that he wanted to talk to Gina about and see if she could shed some light on them… and these were things that genuinely did give bump in the night, in a very real way! Gina talked us through the equipment she uses, some of the strange things she caught on camera and on audio. She talks us through her recent investigations at the Sorrell Weed House and the Lizzie Borden House…. Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her father 40 whacks, when she saw what she had done, she gave her mother 41….. and the spirit she managed to contact in that house. Jerry Springer, Jeremy Kyle, Sally Jessie…. every time that they did a DNA special, you had to watch. Well this is Tall Boy Radio’s take on those special and there’s a lot at stake! Beans traced the lost branch to his family tree and Beau took a trip to England based on that information. Could you imagine if that was wrong? We find out, thanks to the good folks at ancestry.com and their DNA testing. There’s plenty of other stuff too : A DNA quiz, looking into our background, a new variety of the Duchesse and we close out with some music. #TBR125 Double Denim Company

You can’t beat a good covers band and Double Denim Company are a GOOD covers band. Based in South Cheshire, they play classic 70s and 80s rock. We were fortunate enough to be joined by their Lead Singer Tim Hodgins, their lead Guitarist Jon Ayres and their drummer Justyn “Joppa” Peake to talk about some of their experiences. This episode is a little more chaotic than our usual output but that just made it a bit more fun. They talk us through some funny stories, headlining the local music festival, and some gigs that didn’t go to plan. Nothing was off limits with these guys! Be sure to grab yourself a cold one, kick back and rock out 🤟 – The opening music is “London Bayou” by Oscar Albis Rodriguez and the closing music is “BDS” by Lewis Pickford. – Did you know that you can get 20% off your order at ollys-ollys.com just by listening to this podcast? #TBR124 That’s the spirit!

We were joined by Jason – a man of many interests… a model railway enthusiast, an Internet DJ and a Paranormal investigator. The main focus of this episode is his investigations into the other realm. He tells us about faked photography, real life experiences, spectral voices picked up on his equipment… and then there’s his own home which is still inhabited by the previous owners who have passed away… and that’s all before we get to a story of an out of body experience. We were joined by fellow Podcaster Mark Birtles from the Railwaymen podcast to talk about his football club Crewe Alex… but not in the sense that you may expect. Mark has had his struggles with his mental health and it lead him in 2019 to try and take his life. His love for his football club and the fact they are a smaller team with great ties to the local community means that could reach out to him and quite literally save his life. We were joined all the way from Pittsburgh, PA by Anon Mess Age Sage – a musician and creative mind. He talks us through the thinking process behind his music and how he has turned negatives into positives. His music – not to everyone’s taste by his own admission – is chaotic but also cathartic. It’s a freedom of artistic impression. With comparisons to fellow Yinzer Andy Warhol, we had a fascinating and very frank conversation that you’re sure to take something away from. #TBR118 A handful of nuts

We take a glance (minus Andy due to a scheduling conflict and not his either!!) at what’s been going on in the world of Sport. We look at Tyson Fury’s uppercut, Granit Xhaka’s goal against Man United and look at the sporting superlatives and hyperboles that the media have attached to those. We ask Gaz – will Everton get relegated? His answer may surprise you. We look at Boxing out of the ring with the incident involving Iron Mike Tyson on a plane and then onto the world of darts and possibly the greatest nickname in the sport… all with plenty of left turns and Gaz and Dave’s tips to taking a penalty. We finish off by asking some moral questions which leads to a story about a lady called Doreen in a dressing gown. Don’t miss out… go grab yourself a cold one, kick back and enjoy.

We were delighted to be joined by Mike, Tabby and Caleb from the Happy Hour Podcast out of Louisville, Kentucky. Our good pal Bill had an idea for an episode where we talk about the dumb stuff that we’ve done and ended up doing ourselves a mischief… and we thought why not involve our pals from across the pond and get them to join in on the fun. Listener discretion warning : If you don’t like hearing about knees getting mangled, this episode may not be for you. We couldn’t get them on and not talk about their Guinness World Record attempt for the longest podcast and we were absolutely honoured to be asked to join them on the opening slot of their attempt. We’ve all seen Gareth Bale’s comments about the media, just how accountable are they? The sad and untimely passing of Taylor Hawkins. Should their be an age cap on heads of state and monarchs? …and then there’s female swimming and right out of the bat, there’s an apology for a crass joke about the situation from a dude who told everyone to be kind at the start of the episode. #TBR109 – And on the 8th day God created TBR

Yeah we were struggling for a title for this one. The topics were all over the place so we went for something that wasn’t too much to do with the actual episode. There was no Gaz again as he’s struggling with his bionic clavicle instead we were joined by Dave to ask some taxing question. We started off with the 3Rs and how important they are or aren’t to us. We moved on to talk about the device that you’re probably reading this synopsis on – your mobile (cell) phone. How attached are we? Could we give it up? How attached are we to social media? Yes we need it to promote the podcast etcetera… or do we? Where did you find out about this podcast, we’d love to know. Did you find us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter or through your podcast listening platform of choice? Is Social Media a good thing? Then we talked about the 2 ends of your life : Your childhood. Would you rather your child had your childhood or do we wish we had theirs… and then onto growing old. We all had similar thoughts on this one and probably all different to the thoughts we had on it in our 20s. What could we top off a serious episode like this? Cartoons of course. What were your favourite cartoons growing up. Go grab yourself a cold one and joining us on this meandering ride. Whilst Gaz is with us we talk about the Superbowl and it’s iconic halftime show before sharing a few funny Valentine’s day stories… and let’s not forget stories of 2 broken clavicles!! We move on to the West Ham player Kurt Zouma – and although we make light of a massive flaw in British law, no one finds animal cruelty acceptable, we’re just using humour to point a massive irony! There’s a little talk on Joe Rogan and England “opening back up”. Yeah, this one was all over the place. Go grab a cold one, kick back and try not to break your collarbone! There’s plenty of Politics talk, US and UK, plenty of talks about pneumonia, head colds, influenza and…. what’s the other on? There’s a pinch of NFL talk as we’re all rooting for the same team in the Superbowl. We can’t visit Oklahoma without talking a little Joe Exotic – it is the year of the Tiger after all… and there’s a funny Johnny Simo story too! There’s even a little bit of magic thrown in for good fun. You don’t want to miss this one. Go grab yourself a cold one (or your favourite Irish Whiskey), kick back and enjoy! #TBR104 – Tall Boy and the Megaman

There’s no Andy tonight as he has some family commitments but we are joined all the way from California by the hardest working man in PodcastLand – Megaman aka Stephen Martinez from the Megaman podcast. We took more left turns than a Nascar winner. We started on craft beer before talking about podcasts and what it means to us and why it’s such a passion in our lives. We talk abou why we never talk about Covid and politics before talking about Covid and politics. Gaz shares his very unique view on Novak Djockovic before we move on to “Soccer” and the differences between the Premier league and US sports and there’s a little pinch of paranormal talk at the end. Go grab yourself a cold one and enjoy! The opening music is “London Bayou” by Oscar Albis Rodriguez and the closing music is “BDS” by Lewis Pickford.

#TBR103 – Men have Lupus

Lupus. What do you know about it? We barely knew anything and when we looked in to it we were surprised by it’s severity. We were joined by Lou of menhavelupus.org to talk candidly about how the illness has affected him. He realised early on that the support isn’t there. Rather than retreating- he went out there and set up a help group to help men get the answers and the help they need. We were humbled by his sense of purpose. He talks frankly about misdiagnosis, the stigmas around Lupus and what he is doing to give Men (who are often not diagnosed sometimes through pride) the help they need. If you think you are affected, click on the link above – likewise if you want to help or donate: do it TODAY!! Go grab yourself a cold one, listen and learn! #TBR102 – What’s new in ’22?

We’re buying into that New Year, New me BS. We talk about New Year’s revolutions and for one reason or another, we’ve all decided to make some this year (of sorts). Obviously we get distracted along the way and take left turns towards Eddie ‘The Beast’ Hall’s diet, Boilermakers, what would you call a boilermaker if it were made with gin, Black and Tans (they really are Irish) and much more nonsense besides. The opening music is “London Bayou” by Oscar Albis Rodriguez and the closing music is “BDS” by Lewis Pickford. This episode is also available on YouTube

#TBR101 – Room 101

We turn an Orwellian nightmare into a bit of fun. Beans, Gaz and Andy each pick 2 things to be disposed of. What does Gaz hate most about football? What cornerstone of society gets Andy fired up? Which part of the ecosystem does Beans have beef with? What else will trigger their anger? In this episode Beans and Gaz disagree over the phrase “living to work”. Gaz was actually referring to the rising cost of living meaning people needed to work more to make ends meet, whereas Beans was talking about the phrase in it’s literal definition those crazy folks who see work as their purpose for being…. we were talking cross purposes and just wanted to clarify our points. That being said, go grab yourself a cold one, kick back and enjoy. The opening music is “London Bayou” by Oscar Albis Rodriguez and the closing music is “BDS” by Lewis Pickford. Gaz’s turn to ask the questions… and if you know anything about him, you’ll have guessed that they are all sports based. We’re joined by our pal Dave to look at inequality in sport. Be that the race debate in Cricket, or whether sportswomen should be allowed to compete against their male counterparts. We consider it all. There’s the usual NFL talk and we throw down a challenge to any female podcasters out there who think they can take on the boys of TBR at any sport they fancy. #TBR95 – A Digital Dukes of Hazzard

Growing up Beans wished he was Luke Duke. Turns out that dream was a little closer than he thought in that in tracing his American leg of the family tree, he has a cousin Beau. If you listened to episode BDS5, you’ll know the back story, if not, you can always go back and listen to Beans does Genealogy. Beau should have joined us at TBR HQ but due to some passport problems he had to join us digitally and share that story from his perspective… and some of the really weird coincidences that are part of this story. There’s our regular NFL chat and a little bit of hunting talk which should be interesting for our UK listeners before we ask the important question “Is Andy a viking?” Go grab yourself a cold one, kick back and enjoy!

There’s no Gaz again this week but Beans and Andy welcome Dave the Internet guy back as a guest. He asks us a bunch of questions that don’t have a black and white answer, leaving us to get tangled up in grey. Questions like : should nurses be mandated to get the Covid19 vaccination? Should euthanasia we legal in the UK? Is winning the key message to be taught in children’s sport? There’s the usual NFL round-up and Beans can’t resist giving two Man United fans a bit of stick about the Liverpool result before offering to exorcise Dave’s Ghoulies. #TBR87 – A plan (and a Jackson) is born

Andy is back with Beans and Gaz this week and we see just how close we were to guessing the name of his son. Pretty close as it turns out but should we have been closer? We hear all the tales from our trip to Scotland including Beans learns that although masks are supposed to protect us they can also do us harm and how Gaz enjoyed the train ride so much, he refused to get off. We learnt alot from a trip to Scotland – besides look where you’re going whilst putting on a mask and stop looking at your phone when you’re at a train station – and if we don’t do something different about the real lesson that we learned, then did we really learn anything. A plan is put forward that predictably involves a Guinness World Record attempt. The Reload Rub is portioned out and ready to be cooked on tofu, quorn and…. who are we kidding, it’s going on meat! #TBR86 – TBR at the darts

There’s no Andy again this week as he does the rather more important job of being a Dad. Beans and Gaz head north to Whitburn in Scotland to check out the World Cup of Disability Darts. Covid may have affected the number of countries that attended but that didn’t dampen the spirits or the quality of the darts! We interviewed a number of interesting characters and learned alot about podcasting in the field (sorry for the background noise), darts and more importantly the challenges faced by disabled darts players to be recognised for their achievements and to make it available for everyone. First we spoke to Jed Macphee, inventor of the flexi-board that makes moving the board for standing and wheelchair bound players to compete at the same oche. Next we spoke to Snowy Dyson a bilateral amputee who had competed in various degrees and at an incredibly high standard. He had a lot to say about the issues faced and really made us think about something that, if we’re really honest, we had been blind to. We loved his honesty and approach. We spoke to Eddie Bailey about his charity raising for prostate cancer. We spoke to Debbie, a darts player who has travelled aboard to compete in competitions in Malta and Catalonia. Jim Mitchell has done more for disabled darts in Scotland, especially for women, than anyone else. Despite not being disabled himself. He also had an incredible darting collection that was on show in the hotel. Finally we spoke to Scott, one half of Darts-themed family spirits company Double Trouble Drinks who were sponsoring the event a out how they got involved. Enjoy!

#TBR79 – Dave-il’s advocate

It’s a very different episode of the #TallBoyRadio #Podcast this week. Our old school pal Dave (who built the website for us) comes and asks some difficult questions. He plays Devil’s (or Dave-il’s) advocate and questions us on stuff around the legal side of consuming alcohol. Whether that’s age-related sales, drink-driving or license-related questions. Dave also questions us about when drinking alcohol becomes a problem and recognising the signs. These questions made us look inwardly and assess our own drinking. You might not think this episode is for you, I would say give it a go and ask yourself the same questions. It’s a more serious episode but it’s a topic we needed to acknowledge if we’re going to be responsible podcasters.

Beans, Gaz and Andy review the first beer from Double Trouble’s beer club – the Ally Pale ale… before they crack on with the dumbest idea we’ve had for a podcast episode yet. Come at me, Bro : The game. You get 8 cards. 6 fighters of mixed ability and 2 wild card weapon cards. 2 players draw a card and discuss who would win the fight with the non-participants have the final say to the outcome… you can then turn the tables and arm the loser with a wildcard weapon and see if you can turn the tide. Points are awarded for winning, probably. Dumb idea, yeah? Good fun though. I guarantee you’ll play it at least once. We emailed the makers of Top Trumps. We’re yet to hear back. Their loss!

Beans talks about the only unsolved case of air piracy, that of DB Cooper. Did he survive his dramatic escape? and could a deathbed confession be genuine? Gaz talks about the case of Madeleine McCann. Taken from their holiday home in Portugal after being left unattended by her parents, very little is known about the crime. The focus is now on a German man who seems to be connected to the crime. Will there ever be a definitive conclusion to this case? Go grab yourself a cold one, and help us examine the case files.

#TBR68 – Where were you when…?

Where were you when… We take a look at those events that are so shocking that you remember where you were. Every generation has them. For our parents it was the assassination of JFK. For us it was the fatal car accident that took the life of Princess Diana and of course, the terrorist acts in New York City on September the 11th, 2001. We also share some other events that we also remember. It’s a deeper episode than we normally do so grab yourself a cold one.

#TBR67 – Sporting heroes

This week, Beans, Gaz and Andy talk about their sporting heroes. It’s an interesting mix. There’s those that play on a team and stood out ad then there’s individual sportsmen. There’s the odd curveball too… players from teams they don’t support and some dude you probably won’t have heard of. As always we love to hear your sporting heroes. There are no wrong answers (other than Spurs players obviously). Go grab yourself a cold one, kick back and enjoy!

#TBR66 – The dark side of wrestling

Last time we shared our favourite memories of wrestling or more specifically the WWF (WWE). This week we take a look at what goes on behind the glitz and glamour of the lights. The amount of wrestlers that haven’t made it to their 40th birthday is scary and many of those that do, don’t make it much longer afterwards. We talk about the addictions and the stories of those trying to cling on to the high of wrestling in sold out auditoriums. Go grab yourself a cold one, kick back and enjoy.

#TBR63 – Dreams Part 2 : Dream Journals

Our original Dreams episode proved very popular so with some gentle encouragement from Gaz’s eldest daughter, Amy – we finally got round to doing what we frequently promised to do : a follow-up episode. As promised we (well most of us, anyway) kept dream journals since the last episode and we delve into the meaning of some of our… if not wildest, weirdest… dreams. #TBR62 – 80s Music (sifting through the cheese)

The final part of our 1980s trilogy – the music. There’s a difference between 80s music and music of the 1980s. 80s music is cheesy as all hell, of course,.we acknowledge some of it but we focus on the good stuff released then and there really was some great music released in the 1980s (this isn’t just an hour of Beans droning on about The Smiths, we promise!) This is the 2nd part of our 1980s trilogy. In this week’s episode we put forward the argument that some of the best films were made during the decade of cheese. Think about it! There really was some absolute gems made. Disagree? Get in touch and tell us we’re wrong.

1980s TV was the golden era of television. TV shows back then were beyond reproach in terms of their enjoyability and quality (Bullseye aside). Weren’t they? If you disagree with us then get in touch and tell us the case against as in this episode Beans, Gaz and Andy unashamedly put the case for that argument firmly on the table. #59 Funny business

Everybody loves a bit of comedy. Beans, Gaz and Andy are joined by Dave App (aka The Conedy App) to talk about stand-up comedy. It’s something that Dave has not only done plenty of but also he organises and promotes comedy in the Warrington area… so much so that his efforts to entertain during lockdown even got a mention in the House of Commons. We talk about his first time, dying on stage, hecklers and whether the TBR guys could take their show to the Edinburgh fringe. Go grab yourself a cold one, kick back and enjoy!

#58 Technology in sport

Technology in sport – does it make it improve or detract? That was the question posed by one of our regular listeners, Daz. Beans, Gaz and Andy do their best to answer that question. We look at a number of sports including Tennis, Rugby, Horse racing, athletics – to name but a few and look at what technology is used and how it works. The one sport that caused the most debate was inevitably football. The introduction of VAR was meant to take away debate over controversial decisions. We look at whether it has done that. Go grab yourself a cold one, kick back and enjoy.

#57 2 Gins and a Banana Dolphin

What do Beans, Gaz and Andy know about Gin? Very little as it turns out. Fortunately they were joined by the ladies from the Scottish Alchemists podcast to give them a few pointers. We sent them a gin that is made a few miles from us, in Stoke to try and they returned the favour with a 50.2% delicacy. You’ll have to listen to find out who dumped a load of Mediterranean tonic into the gin without first tasting it and who committed the ultimate crime or using banana as a garnish. Kick back, grab a G&T and enjoy!

#56 Why are we fascinated by Serial Killers?

Serial killers. What is it that fascinates us about them? As soon as you see a new documentary about them on whichever streaming platform you use, you know you’re going to ‘just watch the one episode” then get that Netflix message asking if we’re still watching at 3am. We did what Alan Partridge wanted to do “understand Man’s inhumanity to Man and make a program about it”. We look at some famous cases : Harold Shipman, Jack the Ripper and a couple more… and look at what they did and ask why would anyone be interested or intrigued by it. We also ask a few more questions around what we consider a serial killer to be… and what makes them. Go grab yourself a cold one, kick back and enjoy.

#55 Dungeons and Dragons

I’m a level 3 podcaster with a +2 mic and a pet Weasel. Dungeons and Dragons. No we don’t play Dungeons and Dragons… but for 30 years we have played Fantasy role-playing games… just not D&D. We’re joined by a couple of buddies to discuss this hobby. For the most part, we don’t do it anymore. As Gaz has said a number of times on the podcast, we are geeks. We don’t deny our geekdom, in fact in this episode, we embrace it. Go grab yourself a cold one, recuperate your hit points, kick back and enjoy! #54 The biggest show on Earth (NFL review and Superbowl preview)

This week we’re talking NFL football and the Superbowl and we’re honoured to be joined by 2 legends of the podcasting game. Big Tiddy Tidwell and Shiner McShine from the Tiddy and Shiner show out of Tulsa, Oklahoma. With these 2 guys involved, you know we’re going to take a left turn or twenty. We got the NFC North covered with 2 Chicago Bears fans, a Packers fan and a less than enthusiastic Lions fan… as well as the AFC North’s Pittsburgh Steelers. We review the season, talk about our love for the game before casting a TBR-eye on the biggest show on Earth, The Superbowl. #53 Bucket list

Bucket lists – a list of things that you want to achieve before you kick the bucket. This week, Beans, Gaz and Andy have a good long think about what it is that we want to do with our time left on the planet. Facing in to your own mortality is a big deal and planning on getting stuff done at the moment is tough but we managed to cobble some things together. None of us have a ready made bucket list but we’d love to hear from you about what’s on yours. Get in touch and let us know. Want to find out what’s on ours? #52 Just look what they could have won (the darts episode)

Beans, Gaz and Andy are joined by friends of the show David from Double Trouble drinks to discuss their favourite pastime… darts! We talk about all things darts – from the recent world championships where we saw a new champ crowned in Gerwyn Price (who also became the new world number 1) in front of an empty auditorium to the amateur game. Darts, being a game traditionally played in pubs and social clubs has flourished in pandemic times to become a popular online game, it’s been incredible to see. We look at some of the hardware (i.e. darts) and talk about a few of our favourites. Of course, we couldn’t have Dave on without finding out a little about what 2021 has in store for Double Trouble drinks. Short answer : A lot! #51 Life hacks

In this episode we dispense a whole load of information for you to use in your every day life that helps just to make things a little bit easier. This might just be the most useful episode we’ve ever done! As well as all this useful info there’s all the randomness you’d expect… just wait til Gaz asks Andy to share his ideas to make his job easier – it’s the answer that no one expected. As always we’d love to hear your life hacks and we may just share them in a follow-up episode. Go grab yourself a cold one, kick back and enjoy! The opening music is “London Bayou” by Oscar Albis Rodriguez and the closing music is “BDS” by Lewis Pickford.

#50 The songs that saved your life

They say there is no such thing as a bad taste in music – we do our best to dispel this myth. The songs we talk about in this episode is music that has been the soundtrack to our lives. The songs that when we hear them take us back to a time in our lives that is pertinent. The title of this episode is a lyric taken from Rubber Ring by The Smiths… this episode is not entirely about Morrissey and The Smiths, despite Beans’ best efforts. What would you do if your lucky numbers came up and you won the lottery or powerball? If you know Gaz then you know this is one of his favourite topics of conversation. He’s keen to tell us what he’d do with the money and just as keen to find out what Beans and Andy would do if they got lucky.

#45 Brexit

It was a once in a lifetime vote and people came out in record numbers to have their say. Brexit. Should we stay or should we go. If it was a talking point before the vote, it was a full on argument afterwards. Everyone has an opinion on whether it’s a good idea or not. Were we lied to by politicians in order to further their gains? Is it what we really wanted? Is the vote fair to the people of Northern Ireland and Scotland? What will the UK look like once we’re trading by ourselves outside of Europe? Are the boys from TBR qualified to answer these questions. Of course not, but we’ll have a go anyway. As always we’d love to hear your opinions too. Grab a cold sit back and relax and get ready to yell at your listening device!

#44 B.Y.O.B. Brew your own beer 🍺

It’s no secret that here at TBR towers, we’re a big fan of beer. We love to try every beer that is available. Even… the Duchess! Since we started this podcast, we’ve talked about the idea of making a Tall Boy Radio beer and in this episode, that idea moves one step closer to fruition. We’re joined by Ian Palmer. He founded Bike shed brewing. It started as a hobby, then he brewed all the beer for his wedding and then decided to make the leap and get his beer in to the pubs of Staffordshire. He talks us through his journey from ambitious amateur to professional perfectionism. He seems to think it’s something we could do with relative ease. We’ll find out, and as Gaz is involved, you know the idea had to have a competitive element. Grab yourself your favourite cold one, sit back and enjoy.

#43 Whisky throttle

We make no apologies for the length of this episode, it’s really 2 episodes in one. Beans and Andy were really given the VIP treatment this week when David from Double Trouble Drinks was kind enough to let them be part of the first few to test out their latest product (which won’t be available until early 2021) a blended Whisky. These guys love Whisky and they loved this one.
The main episode is about cars. Beans, Gaz and Andy talk about their car history and talk about some of their favourite cars. Turns out we all have a fondness for American muscle cars. Gaz has a quick Q&A for Beans and Andy about cars from the silver screen before the guys plan their favourite road trip.

#35 Cheshire 4 life

We had a lot of fun recording this episode. This week we were joined by our old pal Weave, who’s been involved with every Guinness World Record attempt that we’ve made. We talk to him about his group C4LF’s ideology and their campaign to annex Cheshire from the rest of the UK – be prepared to be entertained as El Presidente lays down his propaganda. He also talks to us about his time on the Edinburgh fringe Festival and that plants the seed for a TBR away day. Speaking of TBR, we showcase some of the Merch available on our online store in this episode – 50% of the sales of these products go to Cancer charities. 0% goes in our pockets. #33 11th September, 2001

There was really only 1 subject that we could talk about. This is an event that shocked the world. The one atrocity that a whole generation of people can remember and watched unfold. As an act of terror it failed because it united people against the wills of evil but a horrendous amount of people lost their life that day and many more had theirs harmed irreparably. We never want to see anything like this happen again.

#32 Kenn-spiracy theories
Behind every big event in history there’s a story. Behind every story there’s somebody questioning it’s authenticity. Do conspiracy theories add up to a hidden truth or is it simply an event too difficult for us to accept is real so we presume it can’t just be as it’s presented to us. We look at some of the bigger conspiracy theories and give our opinions on them. Grab yourself a cold one, sit back and enjoy.

#31 …and a bottle of Rum
Our first bonus episode!!! We’re joined by our good friend David from Double Trouble drinks. Here at Tall Boy Radio, we’re honoured to be part of the rum taste-testing team. #28 2020 division
This episode marks the most serious topic that we’ve covered. Yes it was marred with problems – Andy’s audio sucks in points and Beans and Gaz had a couple of audio issues too. Then it got worse… Gaz’s beer ended up on the floor! None of that distracts from the issues at hand as we look at everything that 2020 has thrown at us so far. Focusing on the Corona virus pandemic and the issues brought up by the Black lives matter movement. The podcast has a much more serious feel this week. #27 Drunken Ramblings Part 2…
This is the second part of our 2 part beer episodes. Recorded on the same night as part 1, we sample some strong beers – squeezing in 6 in 2 hours. Andy introduces Gaz to his favourite beer whilst we talk about the paranormal and a man with insanely big hands… the evening inevitably descends in to chaos when the Carolina Reaper peanuts are opened which leads to us being severely shown up by Andy’s partner, Amy and my wife, Kim.

#26 Drunken ramblings pt1
The title says it all. When Beans, Gaz and Andy first had the idea of doing a podcast together, the original idea was “we each bring a couple of beers and shoot the breeze.” So that’s what we decided to try out. 6 strong continental beers in 2 hours over 2 episodes- what could possibly go wrong?
