If you ever wondered why Gaz refers to us all as geeks (okay, you’re probably not wondering) then now you know. 30+ years ago we first played “Fantasy Roleplaying” games. Although we’ve never played D&D (We have occasionally played AD&D) it seemed appropriate to give this episode the name we did. Gary Geigax’s game is by far and away the most famous of all the games.
We talk about quite a few games. M.E.R.P. (Middle Earth Role Playing) is based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien namely Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit – it’s set in the mythical land of Middle Earth. Call of Cthulhu is another game based on fictional writings, the works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Often set in the 1920s, it’s a horror roleplaying game where ancient gods are summoned by dark cults.
If you played any of these games in your youth and have any of the books knocking around in your attic… get them on ebay, the classic stuff is going for a fortune. Dice, models, games, books… they are all highly sort after. You are almost guaranteed to make more money than you paid for it.
We virtually always come up with a follow-up episode when we do an episode. We don’t have a follow-up for this one but we did talk about doing an episode where we are actually role-playing. That has bad idea written all over it but let’s see if it happens,
